The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series is NASCAR's top racing series. It was formerly known as the Strictly Stock Series (1949), Grand National Series (1950-1971), and the Winston Cup Series (1972-2003). For the 2008 season, the name will be changed to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series to reflect the 2005 merger of NEXTEL Communications with Sprint Corporation.
